Are Lazy People Dumb?

Lazy.....does that also equal dumb?
I consider myself a very patient, somewhat intelligent, hard worker. Though patient and understanding, the one thing that really makes me angry is laziness. Laziness begins early (I work with children and see this often); first it begins with not following directions the first time you’re asked. For instance, maybe when your mother asked you to clean your room, you said, “I’ll do it later.” But never did. Then it evolved into not doing classwork and homework that was expected of you. Your teacher, being patient and understanding, thought it was a developmental phase that you’d “grow out of.” You never did.
By the time you reached college, if you made it that far, you compared yourself to the other lazy college bums that skipped class and barely passed with a C- or a D. Who cared, no one was really checking up on you.You might of thought that you were like everyone else, lazy but you’d somehow end up being part of the middle-class owning a car, a home, having a job.
As you were approaching 30, you might have thought everyone else you knew who was 30 was living at home with their parents, too. You were no different. Times were tough! Making it on your own would have to be put on hold. If you were lucky, maybe you met a girl who was willing to bring home the money and support you as you found yourself. You never did.
Not far from 40, you may be having a panic attack, realizing everyone is passing you up. However, never being able to hold down a job for more than a few months has made it difficult to attain that middle-class dream you thought you were entitled to.
What will happen to you as you approach 50 and can no longer easily find part-time jobs that high school students are applying for? Never having really worked very hard, you may be at a disadvantage to those 30 years younger and willing to slave away to earn that minimum wage salary. What happens during your retirement years, or when you’re too elderly to work? Who will care for you then? Not having worked enough to save up for retirement will come back to bite you in the arse.
Don’t fool yourself, laziness and stupidity end up going hand in hand.
Do you think laziness and lack of intelligence are one in the same? Or, does laziness breed stupidity? Am I wrong? Are lazy people really misunderstood geniuses? What do you think?

Do you think laziness and lack of intelligence are one in the same?
When you talk averages, yes I think lazy people are not as intelligent by a certain degree. That said, I know a few people that are smart and lazy.
I do think that those that aren’t lazy grow smarter with time and experience, and basically enjoy life much more that those sitting in front of the TV, wasting away.
Or, does laziness breed stupidity? Am I wrong?
I think will little Timmy or Sally, watches their parent(s) come home and sit in from of the TV watching a reality this or that show, and they learn to do the same.
So, yes, I think if you are inactive, you do start to slip mentally. Afterall, the brain is like a muscle, use it or lose it…
Are lazy people really misunderstood geniuses? What do you think?
No, I think some have an improper chemical mix, or bad immune systems and are always sick, or other not so obvious problems. But some are just not motivated. Hopefully those that aren’t motivated are smart enough to get out of the rut.
Interesting thought!
I’d also like to add that those that aren’t lazy have more success opportunities that those sitting in front of the TV every night. This is because they interact with other people that can help them in life…

@Money Reasons – Thanks for your comment! I like how you threw in the whole television coach potato thing. I do think that watching television, especially for hours on end, makes you brain a little mushy, or basically really lazy. Instead of actively using it to solve problems, form ideas about something, or to be creative, television junkies are letting their brains basically do nothing. A brain that isn’t active will eventually be more susceptible to minimal synapses.
I don’t like intelligence and laziness go hand in hand. I have several family members that are lazy but smart which is irritating because they could be doing so much more with their lives.
On the other hand, I think you mentioned behavior that is not laziness but rather procrastination. Lots of non-lazy people do this (including myself) because we are putting off something tedious or boring.
I love the topic and hope others chime in with their thoughts.

I meant “I don’t think” in the first sentence. @Bucksome

@Bucksome – Thanks for your comment. But I wonder if lazy people eventually lower their own intelligence by not getting off their behinds and getting motivated? Many times lazy people I know choose not to be continuing life learners, instead thinking they know everything. In the end, I wonder if they sabotage their own future?
I read this and thought what a great topic. Loved hearing the thoughts. Am looking forward to hearing from more people.
Though I don’t disagree with the idea if you don’t use it, it will go.
Some may tell you they learn from the television. But without action, nothing will materialize in them.
There is a point when one who is considered lazy, can still be smart. What about the work it takes to do nothing. They probably spend a good amount of time, effort and intelligence doing nothing or arranging their lives to work with not doing.
Many people will take the easy way. When you don’t follow through with having your kids do what they need to do to be participating humans in the world, they will do only what they are expected to do and that could be nothing. To many parents do for their kids and not have their kids do for themselves. Not all, but many do.
Another thought, having people choose a different path than you described, may have some consider them as being lazy. Not everyone will choose the path the world and society have set up. Does this mean they are lazy or dumb?
This had my chuckle, because I have been wondering if I myself am lazy.
Thanks for the conversation topic.

@Debra – I’m glad to see I got you thinking
! I agree with your comment about how parents don’t follow through with their kids. I think it’s just easier to allow kids to not do anything. It takes a lot of effort to follow through and make sure children are making good choices, completing their homework, cleaning their room, etc. Thanks again for your comment!
