Monday’s and Tuesday’s are becoming jam-packed with projects I must finish and a continuous “to-do” list I am lagging behind on. So, I’ve decided that every so often, I’ll post fun math facts I’ve learned (this relates to personal finance, right?)
I recently posted about the “borrow and pay back method” of subtraction. Well, here is another interesting way to compute subtraction problems that I never knew existed (I guess that is what college courses are for, to learn new things!)
- Subtracting with positive and negative integers:
Do you subtract this way? I found out that some people who work in the restaurant business can do this kind of subtraction in their head. It seems like an easier way to compute mentally. What do you think?

Hi Little, I actually have a question regarding your Saving on Groceries post. You mentioned getting hair care products at Walmart. I buy shampoo at the .99 cent store. You’re right, over priced at the grocery store.
I did score today, 3 cans of chicken broth for a dollar! (at grocery)
One thing I cannot save money on is dog food. I don’t recommend the .99 cent dog foods.

@Scott Barron – I have also bought shampoo from the dollar store as well. But since I buy most of my HBA products at Walmart, I just throw in the shampoo too. And I will take your advice on the pet food. I purchase Iams cat food for my cat and have been able to score $10 off coupons from ebay. I purchased about 10 of them and really stocked up on cat food. Instead of paying $15.99 a bag, I got my cost down to $4.99 with my coupons and when the bags were on sale at my grocery store. Thanks for your comment!
I sometimes count on my fingers! I know that may make you laugh, but it’s the truth.

@Mrs. Money – Don’t feel bad. I do the same thing, and I’ll do it right in front of the students! (Great role model, hey?)
It is interesting how math changes from what you learned in school to what’s helpful in life. I worked a few years in restaurants and did a lot of mental math, and that method is an interesting one, but it worked better for me in that example to subtract 50 from both of them, to round the big number down to the nearest 100. So I’d turn the problem into 400 – 25, which is quickly 375. Of course, that’s just my weirdo way to do it… I remember my 6th grade math teacher said he’d never seen anyone do two- and three-digit multiplication the way I do it
It is quite interesting way of doing math.It make me remember my school days. I used to be a best student in math at school times.I have seen the people who are logical good in mathematics always find easy way to difficult problems in life.
