It sounds like you might be interested in Historical Preservation which is more of a restoration than being an architect. Not only will you learn more about the purpose behind the functionality of the home built, you will also really step through time. I used to live in Savannah where it is a major at my college and there's tons of old homes there that have been preserved. I’ve always lived in smaller places. I like going to http://www.apartmenttherapy.com and looking at the neat ideas they come up with. They have DIY projects and other things to make your place look nice when you’re low on space and money.
