All of the stress that comes with finding, buying, and moving into a home is over, which means you finally have time to kick back and enjoy your new space. Settling into your new area is the fun part, even if you don’t have the budget for major renovations or new furniture. With just a few steps, you can start to own your space and feel more comfortable as soon as you walk through the door. Follow these four steps to make your house feel like a home.

Visit Flea Markets, Garage Sales, and Exchange Apps

Did you budget for home repairs but not furniture? Do you have a brand new plumbing system or roof, but no couch or wall art? Set aside a weekend (or two) to visit local flea markets and garage sales. You can also check apps like Let Go or sites like Craigslist to see if there’s anything interesting people are selling or giving away. This will allow you to fill up your home without breaking the bank.

Prioritize Redecorating Specific Rooms

If you only have the time and budget to redecorate one area of the house at a time, prioritize by choosing the rooms you will spend the most time in. For many homeowners, this is the living room or den because it’s where they relax after a long day at the office. Designing this room to fit your needs will make you love at least part of your home almost immediately. From there you can move on to the kitchen, bedroom, and bathrooms when you have more time and money.

Invite Neighbors Over for a Housewarming Party

Most people seek out homes in cities like Dallas, Texas, because of the communities. They want to live in an area with other families and build a support system. Shortly after you move in, throw a neighborhood party so you can meet everyone. (Better yet, throw a potluck so you do have to make any food.) This is your first step toward putting down roots and becoming part of the community, which should be able to help you adjust in the next few months.

Add Some Creature Comforts Like Candles and Music

In all likelihood, your body is experiencing stress because of the move and trying to adjust to the new living situation. However, you’re able to combat this stress by introducing other stimuli that will provide comfort to your brain and evoke positive memories. Play some of your favorite music while you’re unpacking and light a candle with your favorite scent. Once you have the kitchen unpacked, prepare your favorite meal or bake cookies like you used to when you were a kid. This nostalgia will harken memories of your past home while creating new ones at this one.

Only you can decide how long it takes to feel at home in your new location. The best way to do that is to invest in its upkeep and try to create new memories that will make it hard to leave.
