Front yards define and compliment the style of a home if done right. However, they’re often an under-used space mostly because of privacy issues. Yet, with the right landscaping, front yards can be just as welcoming and secluded as their counter-part, the back yard.

Garden screens can assist in the end result; a private yet functional front yard. Garden screens can consist of a wall, lattice, fence, or shrub that aesthetically shrouds sections of or an entire yard without giving off the appearance of a walled-in fortress. Some of the most beautiful garden screens consist of various materials, often recycled, assembled in a still-inviting manner.

One example of creative screening is shown in a Sunset.com before and after photo set. The home owner had a small-to-medium sized yard to work with. Organizing the yard in geometric panels and creatively planting colorful plants, the owner added depth, color, and some privacy.

Even a minimal screen can help define the front yard from the sidewalk and curb and give a sense of privacy. Using colorful perennials softens the fence and compliments the home design. I personally love drought-tolerant landscaping and think both examples are an excellent way to reduce the cost of a home’s water bill.

Do you use your front yard? Have you added privacy screens in the form of fences or plants to utilize the yard more often?
