This week’s Tuesday Tip, extend the life of your sponge! No need to go through sponges quite so quick, give it a good run through the dishwasher and voila! Clean, lightly used sponges can last a little longer.
Tip #13: Run your sponge through the wash.
Reusing and recycling your sponges save money.
- Save money, don’t purchase sponges as often. Running my slightly used sponges through the dishwasher on the top rack extends their life by a few weeks up to a couple of months. Sometimes my sponges get dingy, but the sponge part isn’t quite deteriorating yet. I don’t have to purchase sponges as often and I save a little dough.
Stretching the life of your sponges is environmentally friendly.
- Reuse, reduce, don’t waste as many sponges! It’s very simple really; get more use out of the sponges you do have, purchase them less often, throw the old ones away less regularly.
Have you tried squeezing a little more usage out of your sponges? Do you think you’d try this method to save a little cash?

I use my sponges as long as I can — you can zap them in the microwave, too!

I am with Rainy Day – I zap mine in the microwave. However, I don’t use sponges much anymore, I use a lot of dish cloths and send them through the washer. I wash my kitchen sink daily so using a simple cloth does the job just fine. The kid’s bathtub is another story… 🙂

@Rainy Day Saver and Everyday Tips – Thanks for the microwave tip! I’ll have to try it. I also like the cloth wipe idea, I’m already replacing quite a bit of paper towels through cloth wipes. I’ll have to see if I can start migrating entirely to cloth wipes.
Thanks for the tips, both dish washer and microwave!!!
I use to hate sponges, but now I will reconsider. Oh, I mainly use a sponge for the car…

I hate the sponges, the one for wash dishes are colecting dirt and bacterias. So, a lot of times I am using old pieces of cotton fabric to clean everything and then I trow it away.
Finnaly my house is cleaner, without to buy too many sponges.
In the past I was looking to offers, and I was buying big quantities of sponges ( I was changing after every cooking session, so 2 time of a week)
