On the fifth day of savings my true love gave to me…
Five golden things…..
three custom pens,
two fluffy gloves,
and a gift card to JC Penney’s..
Okay, I’d be fine with anything made of gold. But giving gold for the holidays isn’t very frugal (and doesn’t fit in with my “savings” theme). However, golden things could be just about anything, even golden wrapped chocolates! Maybe I’m stretching things a bit, but who doesn’t like chocolate?
(On a side note: Have you noticed that my posts are getting shorter, and shorter, as the holidays are getting nearer and nearer?)
Chocolates are great gifts for friends and colleagues and can make terrific stocking stuffers. For instance, I packaged a gift for a colleague who has been tremendously helpful these past few months. It’s a self-made basket of some of the things she likes (books for her class library, a commuter mug, and a Christmas decoration). To top off the basket, I included a few chocolate kisses in the Starbucks mug. It’s just an extra “thanks” for all her help.
Need another example of a chocolate gift? One of my favorite gifts a couple of years ago (that I can’t find anywhere!) were chocolate covered cherries. They were a specific brand with a penguin on it (if anyone knows this brand, please let me know!) and I couldn’t eat enough of them. I was so disappointed when they were gone. But they were sure delicious going down – and memorable enough for me to remember them years later.
Getting back to all things golden- chocolate gold coins can be yummy and can fill that extra space in a holiday stocking. Of course, real gold is appreciated as well. 😉
I’m wondering if I’ll make it to the 12th day of savings. I think I only have 10 more days left before the BIG DAY and 7 more posts.
P.S. I just finished reading Love That Dog and
I think it’s
affected my writing.
(short chunky sentences paralleling poems.)
Have you received memorable chocolates or golden gifts?

My mom and grandma would always get me Ferrero Rocher’s growing up as a gift for special occasions. They were my favourite. It was really sweet.
@Miss T – I’m giving that as a gift to a colleague this year. I think most people like Rocher’s as they’re very popular this time of year.
Just finished reading your post. I think your chocolate covered cherries may have been made by chukar cherries. It is completely random that there is a box of them on my desk right now. I hadn’t heard of them until yesterday! The logo has a black and white bird head that looks a lot like a penguin. They’re different from other brands because they don’t seem to be maraschino cherries and don’t have the white sugary goo.
@Rebecca- Yes! That’s the brand! Thanks so much for sharing that information. I knew it was a name I just couldn’t for the life of me remember. I liked them for the same reason you mentioned; they’re not maraschino cherries but dried cherries – and utterly delicious!
I would be very happy with some quality gold mining company stocks, Rio Tinto or BHP Billiton. Not very Christmassy, but those dividends could pay for Christmas next year.
@Hunter – I think that definitely falls under golden “things.” I’d be just fine with that as well. 😉
Who doesn’t love golden chocolate gold coins? This is all time winner for Christmas season!
