Okay, so maybe I’m jumping the gun a little bit here, but with the temperature peaking at 85 degrees today, I can feel summer right around the corner! Since my brain is thinking “summer”, I’m already planning out fun, cheap activities like bike riding, camping, and tubing.
As you can tell by my list, I like being outside. But there’s still plenty to do inside, too. Staying within my budget, ie. cheap, free, or really inexpensive, here’s a list of my favorite summer activities:
- Camping – $ – $$. From free to $20 bucks a night (still cheap), camping is a great summer activity for the whole family. If you don’t have camping gear, hit Craigslist or borrow some gear from a friend. Can’t stand the thought of “roughing it?” Spending a little more, you can rent an RV from CruiseAmerica.com.
- Picnics – $. Another family adventure. Pack up a backpack, basket, or tote with your favorite lunch items and hit a local park. If you just can’t leave the house (newborn baby, not a lot of time, etc.), plant it right in your own backyard.
- Libraries- FREE. Local libraries are great sources for checking out a favorite book or taking your kids to story-time.
- Music in the park – FREE. Some local parks host free music in the park on summer nights. One local park near me hosts movies in the park on one night and music on another. Check out Yelp.com to help you find local activities.

What are your local plans this summer?

These are all great ideas! I love once it starts getting warmer outside 🙂
@Michelle – I also love this time of year -late spring, early summer. The weather is perfect for a day outside.
I remember going camping awhile back and being surprised at how expensive it is, but it is definitely cheap if you have the right gear already. I love summer and I can’t wait until it’s here! The beach is free, generally, too!
@Tushar – Camping can be as inexpensive or as expensive as you make it. But it definitely helps to already have the gear. It’s a great investment if you enjoy camping!
Great activities you got lined up there. I can’t wait for activities of our own. Enjoying the sun much!
Awesome ideas.. we will be doing all of these. With 4 kids, you learn to find cheap activities really fast! We go to the beach a lot!
The music in the park idea is awesome. Our little town also shows movies from last year under the stars. I’m skipping this week because it’s a Twighlight movie (yack!), but it’s generally really super fun.
I’d skip on the Twilight movie too! We also have a local park that shows movies, has flea markets and sometimes even car shows. Good, cheap fun!
