Some houses are great buildings, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they are a home. A home is so much more than four walls and a roof; it is somewhere that you feel safe and secure, and where you feel welcome as soon as you step through the door. There are some easy ways to make your house feel like a home – here are just a few to get you started.

Windows

The windows in your home are incredibly important. You may not realize it, but you spend a large amount of time looking at them and through them. Every time you pass a window on your way to another room, it’s likely that you at least glance at it. So why not make those windows more personal? You can do away with the drapes and blinds that where there when you moved in and change them for something that you like. This is your home, so it should reflect your personality. If you live with other people, then they should be able to choose the drapes for their own rooms too. You can even design your own material if you want to, and have the drapes made out of that.

Art

Hanging pictures on the wall is a great way to make a house a home. Everyone has their own taste when it comes to art, so now is your chance to hang something up that you truly love, and that you enjoy looking at. Whether or not visitors like it is another matter – but either way it will be a conversation piece! If you prefer framed photos of the family, why not pick fun, candid ones rather than ones that were posed and taken professionally? The more memories you can put around your house, the better – they will make you feel warm and happy whenever you look at them.

Change the Color

Even if you’ve lived in a place for many years, have you ever really looked at the color on the walls and thought about it? If you haven’t, now might be the time to start! Take a good look at it and ask yourself whether it’s the color you would have chosen if you’d had first pick. If not, change it! Make it Smell Good

Think back to all the places you’ve ever felt most welcome, and it’s likely that there will be a wonderful aroma associated with them. A house with no inviting smells in it will never feel particularly homely. You can use air fresheners, incense, or scented candles, for example, to give your house a wonderful scent that makes you feel happy to be there. Or you might create those aromas through baking on the weekend, or cooking up a batch of great food that you can freeze for quick, easy suppers. As long as there is a delicious, memory making (and evoking) smell as you step into a house, it can easily be a home.

All the Pillows

One easy (and comfortable!) way to make your house feel more like a home is to have pillows, cushions, and throws on the furniture. Sofas, chairs, and of course beds, can all look wonderful and so very attractive when they are covered in soft, squishy cushions. You can always remove them if they’re not practical for sleeping or sitting on, and then put them back to make the furniture look properly dressed when you’re not using it. There is nothing quite like the feeling of sinking into a soft, downy pillow to make you feel at home.

Plants

Plants are a fantastic way to improve the homely appeal of your house. They make the air a better quality, so you’ll feel healthier, but they also look beautiful. They don’t take much looking after – just watering regularly and being placed in the right area (some need sunlight, some not so much) – and they tend to work their magic all by themselves. If you like something that’s even lower maintenance, what about fresh cut flowers? Plants are known to boost your mood and keep your stress levels lower too, so all in all they are a fantastic addition to any home.

Door handles

Door handles are just there, aren’t they? They’re useful, sure, but other than that? Do we even really take notice of them? Well if we don’t, we should. Changing your door’s handles can change the entire appearance of the interior of a property, creating an instant home and giving it personality. There are so many different types of handles now that you can have mini works of art on each door, giving every room its own look.
