Tuesday Tips, Just Another Great Post from Little HouseI’m changing the format of Tuesday Tips a bit. It might not always be saving money with an environmental twist. Instead, I’ll list my category below and summarize the benefits of that tip. Why am I changing it up a bit? I’ve got writer’s block! Well, at least when it comes to the environment part. So bear with me and enjoy these frugal tips…

Tip # 30: Ways to Save Money on Eating Out

  • Instead of ordering a full meal, select a filling appetizer. This works especially well if you go to a local restaurant during happy hour. Many places offer half-off appetizers.
  • Share an entree with your partner. My husband and I are always over whelmed by the amount of food restaurants serve. Instead of ordering our own dish, we share one entree and an appetizer, or we each order our own soup or salad to compliment the meal.
  • Use coupons. Chain restaurants often mail or email discounts to their return customers. No point in paying full price if specials are constantly available.
  • Eat at an independently owned restaurant. Many smaller, mom-and-pop owned restaurants are less expensive than the chain restaurants. Search some out in your neighborhood and ask friends for recommendations.
  • Choose a place that’s half way between fast-food and fine-dining. Many places, like Chipotle, are a mix between fast-food and a slightly nicer dining atmosphere. Instead of dining at a more prestigious restaurant, pick someplace in the middle. The prices are normally more reasonable.

When you eat out, do you share a meal with your partner? Have you tried these tips? Do you avoid restaurants all together?

  1. My number one rule is to only drink water when eating out. Pop/alcohol can add a ton to the final bill!

  2. Little House, I really disagree with Mr. Credit Card’s tip. The refillable soda is for one person, not two. In fact many restaurants will charge two sodas if two are drinking it and getting refills. That borders on theft in my opinion.
