This is the last day to purchase the Tumbleweed Popomo House Plan for only $9.99! This is one of Jay Shafer’s mid-sized, tiny house plans that’s quite modern in style. It reminds me of a Frank Lloyd Wright ranch-style/modern home of the 1950’s. At 172 square feet, it’s size is just right for a single person or a couple. It’s apparently also one of the easier plans to build as well if you’re a newbie!

And, if you happen to miss out on this sale; or it’s not quite the plan you’ve been drooling over, Tumbleweed Houses is offering a build-it workshop in Hawaii on March 26th and 27th, 2011. If you’re planning a trip, or need a good reason to go to Hawaii, the workshop starts at just $99 and all others are on sale for 20% off until Christmas.

Small houses rock!

  1. You know, one of the engineers at work built the first two houses he lived in by himself. I know one of them was a type of A frame ski cabin thing.

I love looking at unconventional housing. I have a dream to buy a nice hunk of land and build my dream home via a pay as I go plan. I must write about it some more.

    • @First Gen American – If you’re serious, I have lots of great plans I’ve found online. Some of my favorites are the the Raleigh Greenbelt that has lots of options (by Wieler I think) and the Rocio Romero LV homes. I still think that in a few years this might be the path I take to home ownership. 😉

  2. This may be my dream, but certainly not my husband’s. At least not yet. If our job situation doesn’t change, he thinks we will be in our house for another 5 years and then plans to move. The reason is 2fold. One, he wants to be in a better school district when my son enters middle school, and 2, Babci will be in her 80’s by then and we figure she’ll need to live with us by then god willing. We only have a 3 bedroom house right now, so it would be hard to have 5 people living in it.

I haven’t seriously started looking at land or anything yet. I don’t have the money at this time. Maybe in a year or so I will.

Interesting, build your own tiny home…

These super-small homes are getting more popular, from what I have seen. Goes along with the minimalist, frugal wave that’s hit our country during the economic downturn.

By the way, I enjoy both the FLW/50’s modern look. Something about it seems appealing…maybe it’s the linear, somewhat minimalist view, who knows. Some like it, most probably don’t…I’m in the first category. These homes do seem to fit that genre, I agree.

    • @Squirrelers – I think I’d have to agree that many people may not appreciate the FLW style of homes from a first appearance. However, some of the most amazing things about that style and design is the interiors; they are usually really open designs that utilize space to the fullest.

  4. @Retire by Forty – What a terrific idea! I know that Tumbleweed Houses has one house they rent out during the summer, I believe it’s the Fencl model. I love the idea of a cluster of them for backpackers or hikers.
